I have grown up visiting local markets, but nothing fully prepared me for the Witch's Market in La Paz, Bolivia.
In addition to the traditional souvenirs, the Witch's Market caters to the spiritual and magical needs of customers. Need the ingredients to cast a spell, this is the place. From ointments to mystical cures, the Witch's Market can meet your needs.
Most surprising to me, was the prevalence of mummified llamas that were available for purchase. Ever shop had a collection hanging outside the window, with more overhead as you walked in the door. They are obviously popular (they seemed to be the most in stock item), but I had no idea why anyone would want to buy one.
After talking to one of the shop keepers (who looked more like a typical shop keeper then with), I learned that llamas are sacred in Andean culture and are sacrificed to bring good luck and fortune to those who make the sacrifice. For those who practice the traditional religions of the Andes, a mummified llama should be placed under the foundation of a new building and the place to get that mummified llama, you guessed it...the Witch's Market.
